ADDISON

“Never this extreme,” Tobias told Marina.

Her frown deepened, her blue eyes sharpening. The pulse of her magic radiated through my sternum, causing my breath to catch with each beat. The telltale hum of active magic was higher than that of the pack’s. Fine tremors racked through my body, and my hands fisted over and over. Some innate part of me squirmed under the Other’s attention, trying to get out from under the suppressing blanket laid over top of it, and I grew light headed as the moment stretched on.

“I know it’s uncomfortable,” Marina said, her voice lowered. It flowed over me, soothing me even as the thrashing grew worse in my chest. She pressed more firmly against me. “Give me two more minutes to assess everything, and I’ll lift the suppressant. Mr. Philips had to forcibly stop your son’s First Shift, and I can see the webbing on his neck. I want to make sure you all make it back to Denver intact. I swear to you I mean yours no harm.” Her voice rang with sincerity, and a rush of new magic spread from where our blood mixed under her hand, sending an electric pulse up my neck. My heart rate picked up again despite her magic blanketing everything.

A small nod seemed enough to satisfy her.

“Mr. Frazer?”

“Yes, ma’am?” His reply was instantaneous.

“Do you need to take a walk?”

“I’m alright, ma’am.” Declan was breathless, and I saw movement in my peripheral that suggested he was trying to stretch without standing. The Other pressed her lips into a flat line but made no comment about his resistance to leaving.

“Mr. Philips, are you alright?”

The sound of the door opening had my eyes widening, my hands twisting into the skirt of my cocktail dress to hide their renewed trembling. Her other hand dropped to my knee, where she grasped it with a light touch in what seemed to be an attempt to calm me.

“Marina?” A concerned male voice asked from behind me. She shook her head once but motioned the man forward. His footsteps echoed off the polished stone floors.

“Mr. Philips, are you steady? Do you need a rag?” Marina asked again.

A short pause filled with the slight rustling of someone adjusting. “I have it under control, ma’am.”

She nodded. “The Alpha?”

“Under the influence of Calm. It should last at least another few minutes but could take up to fifteen to wear off completely. I’m almost positive I stopped him in time.”

Her lips pursed, but she nodded. “I’ll assess him before setting the binding myself. Mr. Gray?”

“I’m fine. I’ve experienced another that was nearly as bad.”

My throat constricted, and I swallowed almost compulsively. Yet another reminder this week of what happened when Lukas bound me to him. Marina seemed to let go of a pent up breath, shoulders dropping and jaw releasing tension. The man came to stand beside her and gave her something, leaning to whisper in her ear, quiet enough I couldn’t hear it.

“I’ll do it,” Tobias said into the stillness, seeming to hear the man’s question.
